THE BUILDER

The ideal builder for a Class 40 boat would be one with longtime experience building high-quality boats out of epoxy resins. They would have their own in-house carbon-fiber spar shop managed by an engineer with experience at the highest level of the sport. Like no other builder in the USA, Novis Marine combines these unique capabilities. Novis already has years of experience building its Tartan and C&C models with epoxy hulls and carbon rigs. Unlike most builders, Novis has its own in-house carbon spar production facility, which was established by noted America’s Cup mast designer, David Hulse. With the capability to build the entire project under one roof, Novis can integrate systems, contain weights and manage costs better than any builder in the class.

CONSTRUCTION

The basic structure of a sailboat should be strong and light. Weight belongs in the keel, not in the hull and deck. Novis’ industry leading laminate technology, construction techniques and carbon spars provide the safety, strength and speed that make Novis’ boats distinctive.

Developed in collaboration with High Modulus of New Zealand, a world-leading composite engineering firm, Novis’ proprietary epoxy, vacuum-infused laminate develops an optimum resin-to-glass ratio thereby producing hull and deck structures that lead the sailing industry in strength, stiffness, durability, and osmotic resistance. Polyester laminates belong in children’s toys, not sailboats.

Keel floors, mast step, chain plate attachment points, structural stringers and bulkheads are bonded in place with fiberglass reinforcement and Novis’ proprietary blended epoxy resin. This unique Novis construction technique provides 400% greater strength than conventional construction techniques in these critical structural elements. All thru-hull fittings are installed in solid laminate, without coring, to prevent water migration into the laminate. Careful attention to detail is taken when installing all fittings to ensure laminate integrity, moisture resistance and safe operation.
